Dynamic Strategy-Practitioner The Impact of Social Media in Project Management

The Impact of Social Media in Project Management
Dynamic Strategy – Practitioner Article

Developing a Model for Social Media in Project Management Communications by Herbert Remidez and Nory B. Jones talks about how social media is impacting the communications of many businesses and companies worldwide. This is an important topic because social media has become a universal means of communicating with others both personally and professionally. Businesses are faced with many challenges and in today’s economy we are living in the era of technology were transactions are made faster so there needs to be a means of communicating with each other quickly other than email to become more productive and effective. The use of social media has become a favorable trend for businesses as it allows them to use it as a tool thus creating value for their company. Some of the most well-known media channels are Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Using social media has given businesses the advantage of keeping communication lines open and making it easily accessible to all aspects involving communication between the inside and outside domain.

Since social media has become an important factor for those especially when working at distant locations the authors of the following article will focus on social media for project management communications. In the research that was conducted, the authors are seeking to develop a model for social media on project management communication to bridge any gaps between managers and co-workers who are in distant locations. Often project manager’s work at various locations and this break can make it quite difficult for managers and co-workers to have closeness with each other as they would if working in the same location every day. The authors discuss the research that has been done and how social media can be a valuable source by “improving decision making and project spaces” for project management. The following article written by Herbert Remidez and Nory B. Jones discusses four main topics on how social media impacts Project Management:

1. Social Networks and Social Media
2. Trust
3. Communication and Project Management Information Systems
4. Model Foundations

The author considers the significance that social media can have for project managers by building a foundation of trust that can grow into solid relationships. While exploring the significance of social media they found in a "2009 survey by McKinsey of 1700 executives worldwide showed that about 64% of these companies were using social media for effective internal communications (Culnan et al., 2010).” The authors suggest that the current project management information systems are not sufficient because of how our current times are changing how we conduct business. In the future, information systems will need to support project managers which in turn will develop project success. If a model for social media is implemented into project management it will create an environment of relationship building and trust not only for project managers but for stakeholders as well. No models are currently available since social media is still a new practice for project management.

  1. Sara,

This is a very interesting article especially since social media has not only impacted society but has also greatly influenced businesses in many ways. I think it is no surprise to anticipate social media as a practice of project management in the future. The main topics of social media that impact project management, discussed in the article by Herbert Remidez and Nory Jone is something businesses need to start considering as social media is expected to grow over the years to come.

  2. Sara,

Great article. It is a great way for managers at different locations that have to work together as a whole to keep in contact and to share their expertise. I know there always has been teleconferencing and video conferencing, but I can wait what technology will have in store to stream line everything.

  3. I think social media in a business context supports communication and collaboration, and can be useful in an environment with distributed teams. It’s not going to work with every project or every team, but it is something that project managers can now consider as a supplementary tool to their existing methods, tools and approaches. I agree that managing the stream of information is important, but who on your project team would you want to not have a voice? I think encouraging contributions from everyone is essential, and it’s the project manager’s job to ensure the conversation stays on topic.

  4. Sara,

I really enjoyed your article. I do agree that social media has really helped many organizations, not only with team projects, but also with advertising and product reviews. I do not have a social media account, but I can see how managers and co workers could develope a closer relationship through this.
