Business Analysis Current Event Blog-Melissa Love

New Lab working on security shoe sole to ID people.
By The Associated Press Kevin Begos
The issue and the importance of this new technology that “A new lab is working to perfect special shoe insoles that can help monitor access to high-security areas, like nuclear power plants or special military bases”. Is that with this new technologies it can help heighten our security, because “the concept is based on research that shows each person has unique feet, and ways of walking”. It is also less invasive than eye scans that are currently being used for high-security areas. If this new technology does hit the market and even currently at trial stage it is bringing potential employment for several U.S. cities.

The people currently involved in this research is the current lab doing the creating, Pedo-Biometrics Lab, in Pittsburgh which is partnered with Autonomous ID, a Canadian company.

The events that have already occurred are they have done testing and found that this invention gives more than 99 percent accuracy. The bio-soles might also have medical uses. Several papers presented this month at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Vancouver suggest changes in how elderly people walk — such as a slowing pace or variable stride — can provide early warnings of dementia”. It also found that the bio-soles can detect things such as injuries and fatigue.

The expected outcome is that this new invention will hit the market and the U.S. Department of Defense will want to purchase this new wave of technology that will supply a new way of monitoring our heightened secure areas.

Implications of the outcome on this new technology are exactly that it, it is new. With anything new there are glitches and concerns of if it is really working, especially with this technology seeing it is something aimed at an area that is to help protect secure areas. Managers would need to make sure that the research done is accurate and that the bio-soles are a good fit or replacement for what we currently have in place. There is no reason they could not use the eye scanners on top of the bio-soles until they confirm any glitches.

  1. Wow, this is crazy, and I have mixed feelings about the invention. I am really intrigued at the possibility of early detection of dementia, but am not sure about the use in high security areas. It would seem like it would be very expensive to install the necessary measures for these soles to work. There would have to be technology to record a person's walking habits, track them, record where they've traveled, and obviously have to be monitored. I also wonder if the technology would be damaged once the shoes begin to wear down, since we all know that no pair of shoes lasts forever. I will say that the whole idea is interesting though, and I'm curious to see how all of this plays out.

    1. I agree, I am not sure about it either but found the article interesting. I understand that with changing times and technology that everyone including the U.S. is looking for something "NEW" but is this really the way to go seeing we are playing with the security of our Country in a sense if these bio-soles are used for our heightened secure areas, and seeing that is what the manufacturer is leaning towards it makes me a little uneasy. I guess in time we will see if they are able to patent anything that can do the job and do the job right.

  3. This technology is extremely interesting. Anything that the DOD considers investing in sparks interest. They are usually on the cutting edge of security technology. The fact that the DOD is a player means very large sums of money are available for investment, which is a great sign for Pedo-Biometeric Lab.

  4. What makes this new technology so interesting to me is the fact that it could help someone detect injuries they or a disease they may not know they have. Of course it will probably be a few years before this actually hits the market but it an interesting thought to see how they'll be able to track walking patterns. It isn't too farfetched to think this would be possible considering Nike has sort of a primitive technology to track your steps and how much you run.

  5. This article reminds me about the technology that you go shopping, they scan your body and have ID recognition, you dont have to pay or do anything, just walk out because they already scan you. From these new technologies, my friend always tells me about digital scanning invention in which you have your own barcode od driver license, or whatever ID under your skin, so you don't have to carry around and scare of people stealing your ID. I think it may require the unique technique that owned by government that you cannot just kidnap a person and scan by yourself.
